I believe in common sense gun control. While Fox News, the NRA, and right-wing extremists want us to be scared to death of Isis, they want us to ignore the fact that more than 30,000 Americans, many of them children, die of gun violence every year.
The overwhelming majority of Americans want universal background checks and the end to gun show loop-holes. I am a gun owner, and I do too.
The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution reads: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”
What part of “A well regulated” does the NRA not understand? Former Republican presidents Ronald Reagan and George H. Bush understood it well and supported the ban on assault weapons.
If you believe you need assault style weapons with high capacity magazines to protect you against the government, don’t vote for me. That kind of paranoia is not an American idea. Furthermore, if you believe stockpiling such weapons will protect you, perhaps you should check in with the Cliven Bundy clan to see how well that works.
Finally, I do not believe such paranoia is characteristic of the “Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave.”
At a recent breakfast meeting in a Clay City diner, a local farmer laid his .32 caliber, pearl handled derringer on the table and said to me, “This is my gun, I have another in the truck, but I am not a gun nut. I am concerned about my grandchildren and their education. I am concerned that kids are going to private schools where they are taught that George Washington said the Pledge of Allegiance everyday. That is a lie. They are taught that people and dinosaurs lived at the same time. That is a lie, and our tax dollars are supporting that kind of nonsense.”
Now is the time for Americans to be people of courage, not people of fear. Now is the time to show the world that we love our children more than our guns. It is time to stand up to the NRA and the gun manufacturers lobby, and call for common sense gun control.
